Dec. 9, 2024 - Hope in Trying Times

Blessings of peace to all of you, my brothers and sisters. Today I wish to reflect upon the dire state of our world and the great need for Christian witness in these trying times.

We see around us the conflict and bloodshed in Ukraine, a land once part of a united nation, now torn apart by a senseless war. According to President Zelensky, 43,000 souls have already been lost, while Russia's own casualties are no less tragic at 198,000 dead. These numbers serve as a grim reminder of the fruit of division and hatred sown among nations.

Even further east, the Syrian Civil War rages on with still more lives claimed by its unending violence. As our Lord Jesus foretold, 'Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom' (Luke 21:10-11). Let us pray that an end to this bloodshed may soon be found through the workings of peaceable men and women.

Closer to home in South Korea, a crisis has arisen with the declaration of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol. While he escaped impeachment, we are called to remember St. Paul's words: 'Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established' (Romans 13:1-7). Yet, even as we submit to secular leadership, we must not abdicate our Christian duty to challenge injustice and defend the innocent.

Amidst these challenges, one of our most pressing issues within the Church today is the erosion of our moral witness. In an age of relativism, too often we are silent in the face of sexual abuse, religious liberty abuses, and other grave violations of human dignity. We must not be complicit in such darkness. Instead, let us rally around a renewed commitment to holiness and Christlike discipleship.

But what hope do we have if our world continues on its present course? Dear brethren, the alternatives are dire indeed. If nations fail to turn from their violent ways, 'the day of the Lord will come like a universal conflagration' (2 Peter 3:10). That apocalyptic judgment will consume all that is evil and unjust, leaving naught but ashes.

Blessed are those who contribute to the good of the world. For as the Prophet Isaiah foretold, 'How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news!' (Isaiah 52:7-10). May we be that Beautifulfooted people, living as salt and light in a world so much in need of both.

May the Lord Jesus Christ our true hope, who by his death and resurrection overcame all evil and sin, fill us with His Holy Spirit to live lives that demonstrate His love for every soul. Let us not be bystanders as the fate of humanity is decided. Rather, let us join hands with God's children everywhere to resolve these pressing global issues.

In these trying times, we must lean upon our Lord's promise: 'I am with you always, even unto the end of the age' (Matthew 28:20). May His peace and His Spirit fill us as we strive for a world redeemed in Him. Amen.

What can we do?

For those of us who wish to make a positive impact in the face of these challenging world events, there are several ways we can contribute to bettering lives and resolving conflicts.

Regarding the Syrian Civil War and its regional implications, we can advocate for peaceful conflict resolution and reconciliation. One way is by supporting humanitarian organizations that help displaced persons and refugees. We may also organize educational or awareness-raising campaigns to promote greater understanding between warring factions.

In light of the Ukraine War's devastation, we can pray for an immediate end to violence and for the well-being of civilians caught in the conflict. We can support charities providing medical aid, food, and clothing to those affected. Additionally, we might sponsor individuals or families who have been displaced by the war.

With regards to political instability and martial law in South Korea, our prayers are again with the people and leaders of that nation. However, our role also extends to supporting peace and stability efforts. We can learn about and engage with organizations pushing for conflict resolution and improved governance. By spreading awareness of these causes, we may inspire others to become involved.

These are just a few examples of how individual actions can contribute to resolving world problems. Through prayer, education, advocacy, and service, we can all play a role in bringing hope and peace to the world. May our efforts be guided by faith in humanity's capacity for love and cooperation, as well as our belief in the betterment of societies. Let us all strive to make a positive impact, however small our actions may seem.

Go in peace.
