Oct. 28, 2024 - Faithful Action for Hopeful Change

Blessings of peace to all of you, my brothers and sisters. Today, as we gather in prayer and unity, I wish to address some grave matters that weigh upon our hearts and minds.

Sexual abuse and human trafficking are abominations before God and man. These unspeakable acts reduce the dignity of the vulnerable and shatter the lives of their victims. The Holy Word reminds us that "the truth shall set you free" (John 8:32). Yet, the veil of darkness surrounding these crimes must be lifted by those who would seek justice. It is our collective responsibility to speak out against these heinous acts and bring perpetrators to account. We must not turn a blind eye nor offer cover for the powerful at the expense of the innocent.

We have seen recent instances of sex trafficking charges brought against former figures of authority, including ex-Abercrombie & Fitch boss R[hianna Croxford's report]. This serves as a beacon of hope that even the most privileged and well-guarded offenders will face the full force of the law. May this inspire us to demand more from our leaders and institutions, and to stand with the victims of these deplorable crimes.

The world's ongoing descent into conflict and violence is another grave concern. Nations escalate their hostilities, resorting to military strikes rather than seeking peaceful resolutions (Isaiah 2:4). The thought of atomic warheads and missiles raining down on innocent men, women, and children fills me with dread. Let us pray for the cessation of hostilities and the pursuit of dialogue and diplomacy. As Catholics, we are called to be peacemakers - not participants in the cycle of violence and death.

However, even as we lament these ills, we must also acknowledge the Lord's call to inclusivity and respect for all of His children. The Synod on Bishops' Ministries had its conclusion recently, issuing a clarion call for women to assume leadership roles within our Church (Galatians 3:28). It is high time that the Catholic Church catches up with Christ's vision of equality before God. May we learn from and follow the examples of these courageous women who have already assumed critical roles in ministry.

Yet, my dear brethren and sisters, as we strive to make these changes a reality, let us not forget the gravity of our tasks. The world is teetering on the precipice of disaster if we do not act soon. Unless we rise above our divisions and unite in the common cause of justice, peace, and love, the consequences will be dire indeed.

I prophesy to you today that unless we heeded God's call to mend these rifts and right these wrongs, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Famine, war, pestilence - all manner of tribulations shall beset us if we fail to turn away from violence and selfishness.

But fear not, for there is hope! For as long as men of good will continue to strive for a better world, guided by Jesus' teachings, there is cause for optimism. And so, I call upon you today to rededicate yourselves to these causes. Let us pray with all our hearts for an end to sexual abuse and trafficking; may the words of the prophet Isaiah 2:4 be fulfilled in our lifetime.

God willing, we shall beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks (Isaiah 2:4). We shall welcome women to leadership roles within our beloved Church. And together, as one humanity, we shall forge a path toward a future where love reigns over hate, peace over war, and justice over exploitation.

Amen. May God's divine mercy inspire us to action, and guide us toward a world that reflects His boundless compassion. Amen.

## Sexual Abuse and Trafficking

What can we do?

- Educate ourselves about the reality of sexual abuse and trafficking, and the ways in which they occur.
- Be aware of the warning signs of someone who may be a trafficking victim or abuser.
- Support organizations working to combat these issues, through volunteering, donations, advocacy, and prayer for their efforts.

- We can also take steps to create a society that better protects its most vulnerable members. This includes advocating for legislation to prevent child sexual abuse and trafficking, as well as policies to address the root causes of these issues like poverty and inequality.
- In our daily lives, we can be mindful of how our own actions and words contribute to or conflict with a culture of consent and respect.

## Violence and Conflict Escalation

What can we do?

- Work towards understanding the complexities behind armed conflicts, and work to address their underlying causes.
- Support conflict resolution efforts through organizations that work towards peaceful dialogue and peacekeeping.
- Advocate for policies promoting non-violent conflict resolution and arms reduction.
- In our communities, foster a culture of respect and empathy by engaging in open and honest discussions about differences.

## Leadership Roles for Women in the Church

What can we do?

- Support the call to examine church leadership structures and consider ways women may be further empowered to take on more significant roles.
- Listen to the voices and perspectives of women within our own faith communities, understanding their experiences and dreams for greater participation and representation.
- Advocate for gender equality in our own spiritual practices and religious institutions.

Go in peace. May God's wisdom guide us as we work towards a world where truth sets all free from sexual abuse and trafficking, swords are turned to plowshares, and women lead with confidence in the Church and beyond. Amen.
